Over the three or so years I presented CareerTrack seminars, I did a survey on the sly. I would ask participants at these events to write down what they thought were the three most important characteristics of a great speaker.

Found this suggestion some time ago. I thought it was a rather “purple cow” idea. It is simple, different and yet effective.

In no particular order…

  1. Public Speaking is the #1 fear for most people, surpassing the fear of death. At least you won’t be tormented with this unnecessary fear anymore.

  2. At some point in life, you will be forced to speak in public whether you like it or not. How about preparing yourself in advance?

  3. A successful leader must be competent in expressing himself/herself to a group of people. Unless you do not want to be a leader, public speaking is a must-have skill!

  4. Being a better speaker can help you to stand out from the crowd in a positive way, which leads to increased self-confidence and better grades.

  5. You will inevitably learn to write well because writing skills and speaking skills are not mutually exclusive. When you are good at one, you will naturally be good at the other as well.

  6. Let’s face it! Employers consistently rank public speaking and related communication skills as one of the top skills they look for in employees. You won’t want others to have an unfair advantage over you, will you?

  7. Public Speaking is a trainable skill i.e. you are capable of being an excellent public speaker. Why deprive yourself of such an opportunity to shine?

  8. You will be giving yourself the most important gift of all – the ability to speak up and stand out!

Think Purple Cow!

:: Caution - This is not for the faint-hearted::

In the marketing literature, we learnt about the infamous 4Ps: Product, Price, Place and Promotion. They are important variables to a successful marketing campaign. However not long ago, Seth Godin introduced the 5th P: Purple Cow. An equally, if not more important ‘P’ to transform businesses by becoming remarkable. Although this book was written for business people and entrepreneurs, I would strongly recommend all of you to get a copy of it too! The principles he shared in his book can be directly applied to public speaking too. How cool is that!

Seth Godin’s Presentation: Two key takeaways

Have you watched Seth Godin’s video presentation with Google? If not, you can find it here: All marketers are liars

As promised, I will share with you my thoughts on Seth’s presentation. Here are two things that he did extremely well and I would strongly recommend that you implement both of them in your next presentation!

1. One message per slide

He is an author of over six best selling books including Permission Marketing, Idea Virus and Purple Cow.

Here’s a presentation he gave at Google early Feburary this year: All Marketers are Liars For those of you who are dying to pick up innovative ideas on how to market your products, this 50 minutes presentation is a must watch!
