Article: What Is Your “11″?

By Darren LaCroix, 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking

Zip… “Auuurgh! Not now, I’m traveling! I don’t have time for this!” I screamed to myself. I was in Orlando teaching our Get Paid to Speak Champ Camp when the zipper on my luggage broke.

As soon as the Boot Camp was over, I took a cab to the department store near my hotel. I went straight to the luggage department in search of a replacement. The choices in luggage were numerous! At a glance, they all seemed the same, and the only thing differentiating them was price.

Interview With Chris King

Once in a while, I like to get opinions from experts around the world. Even if you like chicken rice a lot, it is nice to occassionally indulge in a plate of indian rojak (or salad). Today’s post is one such indulgence.

I chanced upon Chris’s website many months ago and found some of her public speaking articles to be funny and yet point-blank direct. On top of being a professional speaker for eighteen years, Chris was also wildly active in Toastmasters, Ohio Speakers Forum and National Storytelling Network. Let’s hear what she has to say about the following questions.

More Juicy Tips on Hosting

Thanks to Irene Ang, some of us got to be play guests at HP product launch earlier this evening, where she was the resident host. The best way to learn - as I have always advocate - is to watch and observe. So today was quite an eye opener as we see our teacher in action. I picked up a couple of hosting pointers which I want to share with all of you.

The First 5 Minutes That Most Speakers Neglect

We all know how nerve wrecking it can get the night before your speech or presentation. What more the day itself, specifically that five minutes before you get called on stage. World Champion Speaker Ed Tate came up with six quick fixes that you can employ during that cursed five minutes, which may make giving your speech a little less painful. Tis’ The Season To Be Married - Getting Ready Your Wedding Speech

This post is specially written for my friends who are conducting their weddings this year. Yes, 2007 is the season for weddings. According to my friends, 2007 is extremely auspicious for folks born in the year of the Rooster. All thanks to the Romance Star at the west sector, which coincidentally happens to be Rooster’s astrological compass direction. I personally found their justifications for marriage rather amusing. Romance star or not, you still need a wedding speech, don’t you? (grins) So here’s where I come in… not that I have a lot of experiences in giving one. I realize that I need to first get a girlfriend.

Lights, Camera, … CRAP-tion!

I was at Irene Ang’s hosting workshop - From Wubbie to Host - the other day and we were doing a simulated live show. My assignment was to read lines for CNN news. When the cursed red lights began blinking (which means the video cam is recording), I turned from a mighty lion to a deer caught in headlights! Ouch!!! It was extremely painful for my course mates as well. Yes yes… I have bad days too. You know, I really dread seeing the recording next week. My plan is to destroy all evidence so that no one will ever need to watch the horrendous tragedy.

Interview with Scott H Young

We all have our favorite sites that we visit daily. Scott’s blog is one of them. The theme of his blog is Personal Development. What I really like about his blog is his straight-to-the-point content and commitment to his readers. There is always some gem to mine out of every article he writes.

Last month, I casually asked if I could interview him on the topic of public speaking and Scott being Scott, agreed wholeheartedly.

Let’s hear from the man himself!

1. How do you overcome your fear of public speaking (do you have it in the first place??)

What’s Your Act Of Courage?

I want to share with you a story.

Some time back, I received an email from this guy. Let’s call him A. He wanted to take part in my public speaking workshop but he was very fearful. Below is an email he sent me. I am showing you here with his permission.
…………………………
Hi Eric,

I found it on the SAFRA notice board and is very interested.

I have one burning question. How do I overcome the fear and panic attack (leg wobbling, mind blank out, etc) when giving speeches to an audience? I have no problem with one to one.

The Gift Of Risk

Wow! I just read an article titled The Gift of Risk that blew my mind away.

The crux of the article lies in this line:

“The gift of risk-taking doesn’t lie in what you achieve by risking - it lies in who you become as a result of the process…”

When was the last time you took a risk in your speech?

Could you recall the time when you stepped out of your comfort zone and did something outrageous?
