What Does “Everest Guy” David Lim, Knows About Public Speaking?

Enough for him to make quite a bit of money in speaking, at the range of $5000 to $10,000 per engagement!

In case you are oblivious to who he is, David Lim is best known in Singapore for leading the 1st Singapore Mt Everest Expedition. This year, he is going to test his limits again by crossing the world’s largest salt desert (in Bolivia, South America) on foot, weathering the temperature variations of Bolivian winter between 15º C to -20ºC while pulling across Salar Carts weighing 12 kg across 175 km desert at the rate of nearly 30kms per day for 7 - 8 days.

Who Says You Have To Face The Audience When You Speak?

A loyal visitor of The Public Speaking Blog and a downright funny speaker, Darren Fleming recently competed in the Table Topics Competition Finals organized by Toastmasters International. The table topics contest runs this way - the contest chair will announce the topic and you will give a 3 minutes speech in response to that topic on the spot. As you can imagine, it requires you to think at galatic speed and speak with incisive sharp wit.

Maiden Chill-Out @ Geek Terminal - Resounding Success!

Our first chill-out & coaching session at Geek Terminal was a resounding success, testified by the wide grins and tipsy faces of the people who showed up! It started out of a (painful) realization that I will not be seeing all of you for the rest of the year because of my engagement in Sri Lanka. This prompted me to organize a casual meet-up where you can chill over premium wine and have your burning questions on public speaking answered. Tada! Check out the pics we took on Friday.

Being Funny Isn’t Really Rocket Science…

Weekend is coming - in a couple more hours - so I figure I should write something light. Humor immediately comes to mind. In my opinion, adults are wayyyyyyyyyyyyy TOO serious and they should really start to lighten up and laugh a bit more.

As a speaker, being funny is a highly coveted asset that makes you stand out from the rest of the oh-so-typical speakers. In fact, being humorous has been voted as one of the top three attributes that people look out for in a speaker. The other two atrributes include sincerity and content. (Full Article Here)

Who Says Friday The 13th Is An Unlucky Day?

As some of you from the SpeakEZ mailing list may have learnt, I have agreed to take up an overseas training assignment in Sri Lanka after much consideration. The opportunity to set up a team and train them in the business including how to present is simply irresistible. The contract is six months long which means I will not be able to conduct any more training workshops for you until end of the year! As you can imagine, I am quite sad as I enjoy the face-to-face interaction with all of you…

The Nine Best Story Lines For Kick-Ass Presentations

I am a strong advocate of using personal stories and experiences to connect and inspire my audience regardless of the formality of my presentation. If you have been following my blog, you would realize so. To date, I have about five entries that I have enthusiastically written, expounding on the importance of using stories to engage, entertain and educate your audience. (See related entries below)

Adding to the archive of such entries is one inspired by Lois Kelly’s Beyond Buzz: The Next Generation Of Word-of-Mouth Marketing. In her book, she explained the nine types of stories that gets people talking. To put simply (in local context), these stories feed the KPO-ness of my fellow Singaporeans.

Five Ways To Supercharge Your Speaking Skills (inspired from a night of karaoke)

A good buddy of mine and an outright funny speaker whom I got to know from Philadelphia just came back from a nightmarish session of karaoke, which incidentally is one of Singaporeans’ favorite past-time. What I like about Avish’s email to me was his knack of crystallizing lessons that you and I can learnt as we hone our public speaking skills. Enjoy!

This past weekend, I tried something completely new for me - Karaoke!! (If you don’t know what karaoke is it’s a form of entertainment where you get up on stage and sing a well known song. The machine provides the music and the lyrics scroll across the screen for you to read as you sing) I am in fact a performer, but I am not much of a singer. My musical experience amounts to high school musicals eighteen years ago where I got thrown into the chorus and singing improv comedy style where a lack of singing ability was always good for laughs…

Three Great Reads

Guy Kawasaki picked Doug Lawrence’s brains and came up with these excellent tips on preparing physically for your presentations.

When There Is No Quiet, There Can Be No Loud
Love this post by Garr Reynolds. Sounds very zen-ish. But isn’t. The juxtaposition of music creation and presentation creation makes so much sense. Extremely useful for those of you who are aching to leave your audience going “What just happen??!!”

How To Create A Technical Presentation That Makes Steve Job Green With Envy

| THIS ENTRY HAS BEEN DIGGED A WHOOPING 556 TIMES… CLICK HERE TO READ THE COMMENTS BY OTHER READERS |

Been wanting to write a blog entry on how to deliver a technical presentation for the longest time. And then this video came along which got me off my lazy butt. First, watch this really short (1′47″) clip. It helps if you have no clue what “Social Networking” means. Even if you do, watch it. Like me, you will be impressed with both the effectiveness and effortlessness of explaining such an elusive term. One of the viewers even commented how happy HIS MUM was as she finally understands what social networking means. So much for online dictionaries and wikipedia…
