3 Killer Tactics To Help You Score With Your Audience (+ Cute Video To Watch)
The last post was a fairly long one, so I shall keep this one bite-size. Under 300 words if I can. One of the problems that speakers have is this - “I have done all the necessary research, but I still feel like I am not prepared. What should I do?”
Here’s a list of three killer tactics that I use very often that will help allay your fears and uncertainties, and even score with your audience!
1. Get flesh time with your audience before the whole program begins.
Shake their hands. Make small talk. Get to know them. Just this act alone can help you score with your audience later on. If you pay enough attention, you will be able to pick on some interesting conversations that you can bring it up later in your speech. For example, “I had this conversation with Michelle earlier and it is interesting how she view consumerism…” This will demonstrate your speaking dexerity and relatedness you have with them. I found this particularly useful in calming my nerves as well since I don’t feel like a stranger to my audience.
2. Come earlier and sit in for the presentation before you.
I try not to be the first speaker if I can. Unless the emcee is really experienced, the audience are usually dead. Energy is usually low and everyone is sleepy (if it’s morning). I will sit at the back row and observe how the audience react to the speaker. How do they respond to humor? What gets their attention? Are they generally friendly or aloof?
This will pre-empt me on how I should approach my audience. I will also keep a look out of who are the friendly and responsive faces among the audience. During my speech, I will start off my speaking to them. This will help me establish initial contact with the otherwise cold audience.
3. Leverage on the highlights and humor points

The Kiwi took the time and effort to nail trees to the side of a cliff to create the illusion that he was flying when he jumped down the edge of the cliff.
