Article: I Learned More in 77 Days Than I Did in 10 Years of Speaking & Comedy

I understand many of you reading this are not Toastmasters, but I believe this example applies to everyone who gives presentations. Some of you have heard me speak about this, but I checked my archives and I do not think I have written about it … (and I wanted to touch on some things I did not have time to speak about).
Although I started in stand-up comedy in 1992, and began speaking professionally in 1994, never have I learned as much as in the 77 days of the summer of 2001. The day I was fortunate to win the Region Seven speech contest (level 5 of 6) was the day that I truly committed to becoming a “student” of speaking. I had 77 days to prepare for the World Championship of Public Speaking.
Let me give you the hard numbers. I watched 90 World Championship contest speeches on video (10 contests, 9 finalists), presented my speech to 22 Toastmaster clubs, received 151 written evaluations, videotaped 6 hours, 46 minutes, 43 seconds of my practice speeches and verbal evaluations - all this to make the most of SEVEN minutes in Anaheim.
That’s what it took to deliver it with confidence and precision; to be able to deal with the unexpected. Some days, I would go to a Toastmasters club in the morning, go to work for a few hours, hit another club on my lunch break, hurry back to work, and attend another club in the evening.
I also painstakingly created a video of just the winning speeches and watched them over and over and over again. Watching the Championship contest videos was enlightening. It was amazing! The winners stood out so clearly, especially up against the best in the world!
What was it? What did they do better than anyone else? How can I do that? These were the questions that I asked myself.
To uncover the answers to these questions I took my studies a step further. I created a video of just the Champions & watched it over and over and over again. It was only after multiple viewings of each winning speech that I started to see the subtle nuances that made all the difference.
Here are the 4 commonalities of World Champion speakers that you can work on in your presentations.
#1 The Invisible One:
This commonality I did not learn in the viewing of the videos, but discovered years later. All of the winners had a presentation coach. If you ever listen to contestants’ interviews at the championship level you’ll hear many of them thank previous World Champions. Why? They sought help from champion speakers with years of high-level experience.
After winning the first few contests, I got serious about winning my district. I asked for coaching from Dave McIlhenny, someone in my district who had won it before. My style of speech writing was the outline form. I never wrote a speech out word for word. I just did not like writing it out. When Dave told me I needed to write out my speech verbatim, I never questioned it. He had been there and knew what it took to win. I followed his success plan.
After winning the Region VII contest, Dave introduced me to Mark Brown, the 1995 World Champion. Mark offered to give me some guidance. Whatever he said I took to heart and never questioned. I completely trusted his judgment. I became a better student. I asked better questions. I drove two-and- one-half hours (one way) to work with him, twice. Yes, I’m glad Mark never told me to jump off a bridge. I would have!
That is why we created our Champions’ Edge Program.
Seemingly invisible on the stage, but nowhere does it show up more!
#2 The Pause:
By far, the one thing that kept jumping out at me was the length of the pauses the winners took. They simply paused longer. Why did they do it? What effect did the long pause have on the audience? And most importantly, how do you do it?
Well, in front of the 2000 audience members at the Championship it dawned on me - a large percentage of the audience did not speak English as their first language. Thus, they needed extra time to “translate” in their minds. Taking your time allows more people in the audience to understand and absorb what you are saying. Comprehension is essential to persuasion.
My observation in Toastmasters is that most speakers write a nine-minute speech and try to deliver it in seven. The Champions, on the other hand, write six-minute speeches and deliver it in seven. Can you understand that difference?
We’ve all heard of “pausing for effect,” but what does that REALLY mean? If we are to create a “mind-shift” in our audience, how can we do that if we are talking while they are thinking? One of the most difficult problems we have is dealing with silence; dealing with how we feel when we are not speaking. Are you there for the audience, or for your own comfort?
What can you do to build your “pause muscle?” It’s simple. In your next presentation look at the questions you ask the audience. Pick one question and force yourself to hold the pause one heartbeat longer than you are comfortable with. If you can make this a habit, your pause muscle will grow along with your impact.
#3 They Weren’t Perfect:
I can tell you what I learned all day long, but you will not understand it to the level I do without watching winning speeches many times over. I highly recommend that. It is enlightening!
The more I watched Ed Tate’s 2000 winning speech over and over again, the more flaws I found. There were little mistakes, and some verbal stumbles. I had not noticed them after the first couple viewings because he was so captivating. Oh, my gosh! It did not matter! Being perfect is not part of winning. In fact, being “flawless” on stage can be a bad thing. The audience cannot relate to you. You do not seem “real.”
This was my favorite commonality! I’m free, I’m free! I don’t have to be perfect, and neither do you. The audience wants you to be authentic. Which brings us to number four.
#4 The Sparkle in Their Eye:
I was watching the contest videos when all of a sudden … bang! There is the winner, I thought, and there were three more contestants to go. How did I know? It took me a while to put my finger on it; the winners had a sparkle in their eyes.
I called up David Brooks, the 1990 World Champion. “David, they all have a sparkle. How do I get the sparkle?” David explained that what I was observing was the fact that the speakers were completely present, “in the moment” he called it. They were passionate about their message, and they could not wait to deliver it.
One of the biggest mistakes most presenters make is they prepare the speech, but the neglect to prepare themselves emotionally for “the moment” they take the stage. How do you prepare? What do you do just before you step in front of the audience?
David suggested that I get up “on stage” long before the actual presentation. I went on stage in front of 2000 empty chairs. I was still nervous. It took me ten minutes before I could fully stand up straight. He encouraged me to walk around the stage, front to back, side to side. I did, and to this day I still do this before a professional speech. I go to the meeting room the night before while the hotel is setting up and I, as David recommended, “Don’t get down until you are comfortable.”
This way you become completely comfortable with the “setting” you will be presenting in. This is essential to your confidence on game day.
What else can you do to prepare? Well, what is the fastest way to change your emotions? Music. Why not listen to music just before you present? I did in my early days of stand-up, and I brought music to the Championship contest. I listened to three of my favorite songs to shift my mood to one of confidence under the pressure. I got myself motivated by listening to: Simply the Best and You Better Be Good to Me by Tina Turner. And then … the Theme from Rocky! What do you think that did for my emotions as I walked on stage? What songs would work best for you?
Whether you are competing in a contest or under the pressure of a big presentation to clients, put these ideas into practice. The cool thing is you don’t have to create a video of the Champions as I did. (Bill Stephens Productions has created one for you, after much begging and pleading by me!) Some people may be envious of my award, but few are envious of that much preparation. I am willing to bet that the few people who are willing to work that hard will be on the stage next year in Arizona.
