Do You Have A Daily Damnit?

Daily damnit is a term I learnt from being a coach at Executive Coach International. In the seven weeks of one-on-one coaching, our client has to come up with five daily damnits, or acts of discipline that they adhere to. These daily damnits are there to build up their discipline which most people are seriously lacking. For example, a daily damnit could be sleeping by 11pm or eating a fruit after every meal. From the name, you know that it is a DAILY act that is excruiatingly hard to complete, which explains the “DAMNIT!” It goes like this… “Damnit, sleep by 11pm!” or “Damnit, eat my fruit!”

So what has it got to do with you?

Remember the quote I shared with you last week by Earl Nightingale?

“Find a field of interest and study it for a minimum of one hour every day. In five years time, you will become an expert in that given field!”

If you truly want to be an expert in public speaking, I suggest you take Earl’s advice seriously. Create a daily damnit for yourself that ensures you spend time improving your public speaking skills. It could be as simple as “read one public speaking article everyday” or “watch one speaker gives a speech everyday”.

Remember, an ocean began with a single droplet of water. So resist being ambitious. Start with something small. It works as long as you do it daily. As Scott Young (another blogger friend of mine) pointed out, a 28 days trial will ensure that a particular act becomes a habit. So set a daily damnit and do it for 28 days.

For starters, you can make it a daily damnit to read at least one entry from this blog (grins). There are over 200 entries as of now, which means if you read one every day and assuming I stop writing, you will have more than enough materials to last you till next year March!

What do you have to lose?

  1. […] Anyway, my point is this - there ARE very insightful public speaking articles and resources that you can read and apply. But knowing you are busy (who don’t these days), I decided to do this instead. Every Friday, I will put up links to the five best articles that I have read over the week and you go read them. Bookmarked them for future references. Print them out to read as you travel. Either way, read them! Make it your daily damnit. […]
