Interview With Chris King
Once in a while, I like to get opinions from experts around the world. Even if you like chicken rice a lot, it is nice to occassionally indulge in a plate of indian rojak (or salad). Today’s post is one such indulgence.
I chanced upon Chris’s website many months ago and found some of her public speaking articles to be funny and yet point-blank direct. On top of being a professional speaker for eighteen years, Chris was also wildly active in Toastmasters, Ohio Speakers Forum and National Storytelling Network. Let’s hear what she has to say about the following questions.
1. How do you overcome your fear of public speaking (do you have it in the first place??)
I must admit that I don’t remember having a fear of public speaking, although there is a slight apprehension just before a presentation. Once I am up there, as long as I am well prepared, I settle in and enjoy it. For other tellers, I suggest preparation, only speaking on topics they love and are knowledgeable about and realizing that your audience wants you to succeed - after all, you were chosen to speak because you are the “expert.”
2. What are the three most important things all speakers should know when they prepare/deliver a presentation?
First of all prepare, prepare and prepare some more. I always suggest preparing more information than you will need, just to be confident. Do not, however, try to memorize your presentation. It is OK to memorize the opening (I suggest starting with a story) and the closing. Stay within your designated time period. It doesn’t hurt to have a small clock within view and know exactly how long your closing takes, so that when you reach that time, you can wrap it up.
When planning your presentation, know exactly what action and/or theme you want your listeners to take home. I suggest that you set a theme with three main points that adhere to that theme.
3. What was one of your worst speaking experience and how did you overcome it?
When I started speaking, I was giving how-to presentations on flower arranging. I would create large, modern arrangements while talking about design. When I showed up for a program, the woman in charge told me that the place we supposed to use was already being used, so we did not have a space. Since she did not have a garage or a recreation room, I asked if she might have a large porch. She had a small one.
Fortunately, it was summer, so I gave the talk and made the arrangements on the porch while the attendees looked out the kitchen window. Not the best of venues, but they all enjoyed it and it worked out OK.
4. How does a beginner cross the chasm to become a competent speaker? Any tips/advice?
I am a firm believer in Toastmasters and feel that the clubs give members a guideline and a chance to become confident getting up in front of a group. They also have someone evaluate your presentation, and you can ask them to watch for certain areas and/or be as tough as you wish. You can find clubs in your area by visiting www.toastmasters.org. Visit several clubs to find one that suits your personality before you join. Most clubs meet weekly and are low cost. Always be prepared in case someone who has been scheduled to speak doesn’t show up.
5. How do you recommend a beginner speaker find his/her speaking style?
Just speak, speak and speak. You can let groups in your area know that you speak (at first, free of charge) and be willing to fill in. There are clubs and groups, like the Chambers of Commerce, Kiwanis and others that have Speakers’ Bureaus. Attend other speakers’ presentations for tips, but do not copy their styles. Be your own unique person and presenter.
