I am sure all of you have heard and watch American/Singapore Idol like umpteen times. But have you ever thought of a Speaker Idol? Same concept, except contestants speak instead of sing.

And guess what, Speaker Idol is going to be a reality… sooner than you think.

Here’s the low-down of how it happen. I met this producer who owns an online TV site call Active Channel a few months ago. It has a projected viewership of 100,000 and maybe more. From a causal conversation, he came to know about a book that I am writing. (Ok, I know this is news to you as well but rest assured, you will know more about this secret project real soon) Anyway, one thing led to another. And before we knew it, an idea sprang forth. How about doing a Speaker Idol as a pre-launch to my book and his edu-channel?

And boom! One pilot run of Speaker Idol coming up, right here in Singapore!

I am so excited about this project… so much so that even as I am typing this blog entry, my hands are trembling…

To start things going, we will be doing a pilot run of the show. It has been proposed to be 7 episodes long with 5 contestants and 4 judges. Once we have tested the show, we are going to launch a full scale one. Just like the American Idol on TV. We will sieve out the top 12 and they will compete each week on a different speaking theme and you, my friend, are going to decide if they get to go into the finals.

As a priviledged reader of The Public Speaking Blog, I want YOU to be part of this pilot run! Seriously, how can I leave you out of the fun?! Plus, you are going to be part of something that has not been done before! Talk about being trailblazers!

If you are in Singapore and you are itching to get famous, I am considering to invite more people to take part in the Speaker Idol. We are looking at another 5 more! If you are keen, send me an email to eric@ericfeng.com right now!

For this run, the theme is INSPIRATION. So you have to come up with a 5 minutes inspirational speech on any topic. You will of course be evaluated by four distinguished judges, including myself (grins). More about the judges later. Online viewers will later vote for you if they think you are downright inspirational. They will also get to leave comments about your speech. Plus… the winner wins a trophy and quite possibly an album! A speaking album to be specific!

Fame and trophy aside, this would be a golden opportunity to test your speaking skills and have experts give you honest feedback, feedback that will help you grow exponentially as a speaker. However, if - like most people - you prefer to watch and pass judgement OR you don’t stay in Singapore, you can still play a huge part in making Speaker Idol a success. Here’s how.

1. We need names for the show!

In order not to infringe any rights of American Idol, we are renaming the show. So yes, we need your bright ideas! Send me names that you think will fit what we are doing. The more creative, the better. And if your idea is picked, you are going to be rewarded handsomely! What’s there to lose?

2. Help us make this show fun for you to watch!

I am sure we can do more than modelling after American Idol. How else can we make it fun and educational for you the viewer?
