Lights, Camera, … CRAP-tion!
I was at Irene Ang’s hosting workshop - From Wubbie to Host - the other day and we were doing a simulated live show. My assignment was to read lines for CNN news. When the cursed red lights began blinking (which means the video cam is recording), I turned from a mighty lion to a deer caught in headlights! Ouch!!! It was extremely painful for my course mates as well. Yes yes… I have bad days too. You know, I really dread seeing the recording next week. My plan is to destroy all evidence so that no one will ever need to watch the horrendous tragedy.
But of course with tragedy comes a few painful lessons which I want to share with you. Real quick coz’ it still hurts.
1. Never try to be someone else even though that person sounds cooler
Yes, this applies to all situations even if you are reading the news in front of a video camera. I was trying to sound like the news anchor you hear on TV, which was not me at all. As a result, it became very pretentious. The fumbling came about because I was feeling extremely uncomfortable with the pretense. Moral of the story - be yourself at all cost! Last check, authenticity still rules.
2. Get used to your surrounding (in my case, the v-cam)
This was quite a revelation to me. I used to have video cameras shooting me while I conduct my training. Yet with just the camera alone, it scares me. I guess I took comfort in speaking to a live audience which is probably unnatural for most people since they are fearful of public speaking. The point I am trying to make is to be familiar with your surrounding, especially if it is new to you. In my case, coming early to do a test recording could help ease my nerves. Similarly if you were to give a presentation, you may want to come earlier to check out the venue. Find your spot and do a rehearsal. This way you reduce the unfamiliarity which is the cause of most panic.
3. Even when you forget your lines, never show it…
I am reminded of the stress of trying to remember lines. The stress was more apparent for me during the shoot since I had to say line for line (as a news anchor). However I also realize that no one will know if I miss a few verbs or paraphrase some lines. The trick is to remain calm at all time. The audience will never know if you miss a line or add a line, as long as you remain calm and confident.
So here is it. Lessons on hindsight. Will this setback stop me from ever speaking in front of the camera again? Hell no! Besides, this is only session two. I have eight more to go. Shall share more crazy stuff again next week. Ciaos!
