One Of The Most Powerful Secrets Of All Times
It lies in this Greek word - Synaesthesia
…which means the merging of all senses.
I got this from reading a business book titled “There’s a customer born every minute” by Joe Vitale. On top of relishing the secrets of one of American’s most well known businessman P.T. Barnum, there are two particular sections that I want to point out. Chapter 12 of “How Barnum got rich after going broke” illustrates the clout of the spoken word. In this chapter, Joe revealed techniques that Barnum employed to become a powerful, persuasive and charismatic speaker. Priceless! The other section is Appendix III that features Barnum’s speech on The Art of Money Getting. The information is all good and dandy but it is his style that is worth examining.
Ok let’s get back to the word “Synaesthesia”. When you prepare your speech, how do you imagine it to be? Just a speech with letters and punctuation jumping out at you? Or an endless nightmare for the jitteries?
Here’s something I want you to try for size.
If your speech is a piece of music, what music will it be?
If your speech is a colour, what colour will it be?
If you speech is a dish, what dish will it be?
The secret is to cross and merge different senses so that your speech becomes richer and more real to the audience.
Here’s how I will interpret my speech.
I imagine my speech to be a Gregorian chant. Mysterious yet alluring, with a touch of tranquility. The audience cannot help but be drawn into the content of speech. At the end of it, they are left wanting more…
As a dish, my speech is a buffet of a mix of both eastern and western cuisine. The audience will feel a gnawing in their stomach as they preview the delectable food. Anticipation rises as they feel their saliva building up in their mouth. Yet there is enough to go around…
If my speech were to be a colour, it has to be blazing red. It embodies high energy and enthusiasm, the kind that is infectious. When I open with my first word, the energy I generate spreads like wild fire to the rest of the audience. Momentum builds up and at the pinnacle of my speech, thousands of fiery arrows are plunged into the hearts of my audience, leaving a mark that can never be erased.
Get my point?
As I am creating the imagery of my speech, I cannot help but feel the excitement building up. It feels as though the entire speech has transcended and has taken a form of life of its own. Now that’s the effect of Synaesthesia!

The next time you rehearse for your speech, let your mind run wild. Summon the best music, most appropriate colour and the most exquisite taste that symbolizes your speech. Your imagination is the limit.
