The First 5 Minutes That Most Speakers Neglect
We all know how nerve wrecking it can get the night before your speech or presentation. What more the day itself, specifically that five minutes before you get called on stage. World Champion Speaker Ed Tate came up with six quick fixes that you can employ during that cursed five minutes, which may make giving your speech a little less painful. (Credits to January’s Champ Edge Phone Conference)
1. Be Audience Centric
Nervousness stems from being speaker-centric. Will they like ME? What if I forget my script? Can they understand what I am saying? Will they laugh at ME? Instead, be audience centric. What will the audience get out of my speech? What are three points the audience can take away today? Is this setting appropriate for my audience? By focusing on your audience’s needs, it allows you to be in control. Control gives you certainty. Certainty kills off nervousness.
2. Anchoring
Recall an incident where you were successful. It could be closing a $100K business deal. It could be winning a trophy. It could even be cooking an edible meal in less than 60 minutes. Whatever works for you. In that particular success scene, how were you feeling? Excitement? Disbelief? Joy? Euphoria? As you await your turn to be called on stage, be in the moment of your success. Re-experience the emotions. If you want, you can also clench your fist and do the Tiger Wood “Yes!” gesture.
3. Positive Affirmation
Before you go up, say something positive to yourself. For example “It is showtime, baby!” or “Let the game begin!”. For me, I like to use this line “Go get them!!!” Create one for yourself!
4. Plan-Pause-Scan
The first thirty seconds on stage is extremely crucial. The speaker is the most nervous and the audience is the most skeptical. Not quite a promising combination. As such, it is foolhardy to start wrecklessly. Ed’s suggestion is to first plan where you want to stand. Locate a spot and stand there. Next, pause and scan the room. Gather yourself together and take a quick glance at your audience. Don’t be afraid to look them in the eye. But please DO NOT stare. It’s rude.
5. Memorize your opening
One of the fears speakers have is forgetting their lines. By memorizing your opening, you eliminate that possibility.
6. Have fun!
Ok, I know it is hard to have fun when you are in a wreck. But by following the first five quick fixes, your chances of having fun is much higher. On top of the six quick fixes, I would also like to suggest that you explore other means to ease your nerves. I know of some people who have to listen to classical music before they speak. Some look at fishes. Some do push-ups. For me, if I were to give a humorous speech, I will first re-watch one of the my favorite standup comedies like Dane Cook or Russell Peters. It acts as a reaffirmation of why I am doing what I am doing. For the rest of the speeches, I will look up at the sky. It has a natural soothing effect on me. So no matter how nervous I am, I will always calm down when I look at the sky (both bright and dark). What’s yours?

“If you do nothing else, your intro and conclusion need to be perfect. Total audience contact and focus. Appropriate pausing. Adequate volume, pace, pitch and power.
And if appropriate, don’t forget to smile at the audience.
If you nail the beginning and end a great degree of forgiveness will be extended for any inadequacies in the middle.”

I have a simple trick that I give my students of public speaking, and it is very practical. It is this: simply rememeber to breath. Breathing will calm your body down enourmously. Once you haev done this, you can combine it with the above techniques to “knock ‘em dead!”
