The Fundamentals of Being Funny As A Speaker
Want to know how to be funny on stage without sounding lame or looking silly?
Ok that was a silly question. Of course you do.
The ability to make your audience laugh at will is a highly coveted skill that can make you very popular among your audience. The fact that humor has been ranked the “third most important characteristic of a great speaker” makes it even more necessary to have it.
Fortunately for you, there are techniques that can help you become funnier on stage. Below are my notes from Avish Parashar’s audio on the fundamentals of being funny as a speaker. He’s one of the best Indian American improvisational comedian in Philadelphia and I am glad I befriended him during my study stint at Philadelphia.
Quick Pointers
1. Being funny has less to do techniques and more to do with attitude.
2. Always look at the funny side of things, ask yourself “What’s funny about this?”
3. Pay attention to stories and things that happen to us. (funny stuff does happen)
4. People learn the best when they are laughing.
5. Practice – test your humor in your presentation and conversations.
6. Seek out other people in the limelight who are funny - learn from them.
7. Make a serious point after your audience laugh, it sticks better.
8. It helps if you are optimistic about life.
9. People are developed funny, not born funny.
10. It’s never about you, it’s about the audience. (don’t tell jokes that YOU think it’s funny)
11. Self effacing humor works. (don’t insult your audience, make fun of yourself)
12. Avoid off language, sexist and racist jokes
Avish also covered a few steps that you can take to become funnier on stage.
1. What’s Funny About This?
Whenever something happen, don’t ignore it. Instead, ask yourself what’s funny about this? Even if you think it’s not funny, ask yourself what could be funny about this? Here’s an example. There was this lady who had breast cancer. Instead of getting depressed, she saw the funny side of her disease. In one of her presentations, she asked her audience:
“Why is it that cancer only grows on your important organs? Why not fats? Gean, I am sorry to tell you that the cancer has spread to all your fats. We have no choice but to remove all of your fats…”
When you have a bad day, your friend will tell you, “we will laugh about it some day.” However, a funny person chooses to make that day today. So can you if you want to be funnier. Here’s what you should start doing. The next time something happens to you, ask yourself immediately “What’s funny about this?”
2. Tap Onto Your Creativity
Being funny starts from being creative. To churn your creative juices, get a journal and start free writing (at least up to 3 pages). In a diary, you think about what you want to say. However in free writing, you don’t. There are no filters. All you have to do is to keep your pen moving. If you are using a computer, then keep typing.
This exercise will also train your mind to think faster and help you tap into your subsconscious. Even if you don’t know what to write, keep your pen moving. You can write things like “I don’t know what to say” or “I have no idea what to write now”. If you train yourself to think quickly, you will eventually come up with ideas that even you will be surprised about.
3. Immerse In Humor
Watch comedy and listen to other humorous speakers. When you do that long enough, your mind will be predisposed to look for funny things when they happen. Cartoons help a lot too!
If you are interested to become a professional speaker, learn from Larry Winget, Mark Mayfield or Judy Carter. She is also the writer of “The Comedy Bible”. Watch improv comedies too for example “Whose line is it anyway?”.
Avish also shared a very simple yet powerful technique to help you brainstorm for funny materials. This technique combines free writing with “what’s funny about this” question. Say you are giving a presentation on customer service, take a clean sheet of paper and start free-writing on what’s funny about customer service. Even if you are stuck, keep your pen moving. Write down what your mind gives you. It may not make sense to you but write it down anyway.

What’s funny about post cards?
1. People are just throwing it in your face that they went somewhere and you didn’t.
2. If you are raking the time to write me on the vacation, there must not be a lot to do there.
3. If you really wished I were there, you should have sent me a plane ticket and not a postcard.
