The Gift Of Risk
Wow! I just read an article titled The Gift of Risk that blew my mind away.
The crux of the article lies in this line:
When was the last time you took a risk in your speech?
Could you recall the time when you stepped out of your comfort zone and did something outrageous?
I could. It was at a 2005 humorous contest held in Philadelphia. I was the only Asian competing. Among me were veterans who spoke perfect English and understood the American culture. And since it was a humorous contest, I had to make them laugh. Trouble is I was never Mr Funny. Lame at best. But definitely not funny. At that time I felt sooooooooo unsure about myself. Can I engage them? Will they listen to me? Should I even compete?
As you can guess, I compete anyway… with a Singaporean mentality.
“Even if I lose, nobody will know… so I won’t lose face…”
The rest is history. Apparently, the Americans dig into my speech. They have not really heard much about Singapore hence they were extra attentive. Ironically my Singaporean accent - minus the Singlish of course - made me stand out from the rest. And so for two months, I advanced in the levels with new found confidence. If you have read the local papers (Straits Time), you will have known the outcome. I won at the Division Level which was no mean feat.
I am telling you this not to show off but to share with you a lesson. The trophy and temporary euphoria was incomparable to the experience I gained out of challenging my limits. My confidence meter rose like the Singapore’s GST (Gross Service Tax). My ability to connect with the audience grew two-folds. And most importantly, I KNOW I can do it.
Indeed, the gift of risk-taking doesn’t lie in what you achieve by risking. In my case, the trophy or the title. It lies in who you become as a result of the process!
So my friends, if you have not taken any risk in your speech or challenge yourself to the next limit, here’s the chance. In your next speech, do something that you usually will avoid doing. For example, volunteering to address a crowd in your business meeting. Try a new technique that you are apprehensive about. Perhaps, experimenting with your voice and body gestures. Whatever it is, take the risk. Do something outrageous. At the end of the day, it is for your growth!

I know what you mean about trying to be humerous when public speaking. I have competed in the humerous contest twice - the first time was during my first year as a Toastmaster. I did not get a single laugh.
The second time I competed was last year. While I got a few laughs, I did not win. I got third (out of 4) and as the second place getter was unable to make it to Area, I went along. I think I got about 5 laughs in the 6min that I was on stage. Needless to say, I wont be making the Division contest! i’ll be there for the International and Table Topics, just not the Humerous.
So how long was it between the first and second humerous contests??????

Yes indeed! I am doing it at my club. I always do things that I am afraid of doing in the real world. If I failed, I learned.
