The “Platinum” Rule of Speaking
I recently heard an audio of Tony Alessandra’s speech from Ted Talks. If you are interested to know more about Ted Talks or Tony Alessandra, you can either click on link or google for them. The whole point of this entry is to share with you a lesson by Tony which makes so much sense. That’s probably why they invited him to speak anyway.
The golden rule has always been to treat people the way you want to be treated… Agree? If you want to be appreciated then first appreciate. If you want to be treated fairly, then first treat others fairly.
However, he introduced the platinum rule which supposedly supercedes the golden rule. (Quick question: How is platinium more expensive than gold??!!) Anyway, his point is that we should treat people the way THEY want to be treated. In short, there should not be any “me” involved in the way you treat others. Even shorter, it’s all about ‘em!
If you recall, I once wrote an article on the importance of knowing your audience. In fact, BE your audience. To reinforce the lesson, I have another piping hot anecdote to share with you.
I recently gave a speech on the importance of failing. And I brought up a couple of analogies. One of which was about the fallen eagle and the other was about the freedom in falling Personally I like the second one better since it was a realization I made after a big fall from the land of complacency. As such, it meant a lot to me. However on two occasions, I received the same feedback. The audience did not quite understand the second analogy. I tried to improve it by acting it out yet I got the same feedback. I later realized that it was much clearer on paper after showing them the illustrations. I concur that the second analogy serves better for the reader than the listener.
On the other hand, the audience love the fallen eage story even though it wasn’t original. (Note: the latter analogy was purely by inspiration) And I was getting tired of telling it. Ironically, on twice occasion, the audience came up to me to compliment me on the eagle story. They thought it was refreshing and appropriate for my message.
So guess which analogy I kept for my speech?
