Tis’ The Season To Be Married - Getting Ready Your Wedding Speech
This post is specially written for my friends who are conducting their weddings this year. Yes, 2007 is the season for weddings. According to my friends, 2007 is extremely auspicious for folks born in the year of the Rooster. All thanks to the Romance Star at the west sector, which coincidentally happens to be Rooster’s astrological compass direction. I personally found their justifications for marriage rather amusing. Romance star or not, you still need a wedding speech, don’t you? (grins) So here’s where I come in… not that I have a lot of experiences in giving one. I realize that I need to first get a girlfriend.
Anyway… let’s start with the NOT-TO-DOs.
1. No grandma or grandpa’s stories please!!!
In other words, be short and sweet. Not very nice to make your guests wait for their first dish to be served. Remember, hungry people are angry people. Word of Advice: 5 mins max.
2. You have no time to thank EVERYONE
It’s really sweet to thank your parents and your partner’s parents. But don’t go overboard by thanking your relatives, relatives’ relatives, relatives’ relatives’ relatives… you know what I mean. Coz’ if this goes on, you will end up thanking your ex-girlfriends and boyfriends too! Word of advice: leave the thanks to the toasting session.
3. Avoid talking about your past relationships
Extremely important. It’s taboo! I know… you won’t have met your current wife/husband if not for being dumped by your ex. And you want to show appreciation. Got it! But here’s the thing. More often than not, when you start lamenting about your past relationships, you make us think that you still have feelings for your ex-es. Seriously, it is way too early to display signs of regret, especially in the presence of your in-laws. Word of advice: Do it after your honeymoon.
4. No internet jokes for crying out loud
I shall not name names but that friend of mine actually used some really lames jokes from the internet. Not sure about the rest, but it sure send goosebumps all over my body. Some really cliche ones include the following:
Marriage requires a man to prepare 4 types of “RINGS” : The Engagement Ring, The Wedding Ring, The Suffer-Ring and The Endue-Ring
Getting married is very much like going to the restaurant with friends. You order what you want, and when you see what the other fellow has, you wish you had ordered that.
They say that when a man holds a woman’s hand before marriage, it is love; after marriage it is self-defence.
And the list goes on.
Use the above and I promise you, there will be no come-back for you. Word of advice: You will better off using personal stories. For the guys, tell us about the fateful day before your proposal. Did you get into any panic attacks? How many times did you rehearse your proposal (or did you have one at all??) For the girls, tell us how you know all along that he is going to propose to you… and how you pretend not to know.
I am sure there are many juicy stories between the both of you. Share them with us, we want to know ALL about them…
5. I say juciy, not saucy
Yes I say juicy stories but not about how you trick your girl to bed… Or something along that line. Although the society is getting more open about things like sex and sexuality, your mum and in-laws may not. So save this for another day. Oh and please leave out the saucy stories that happen to you at your bachelor’s or bachelorette’s party. There is a reason why we hold two SEPARATE parties… Word of advice: Test out your stories to your friends first. Let them be the judge of its appropriateness.
I have addressed the not-to-dos. How about to-dos?
Frankly, with all your wedding planning going on, you won’t have much time to prepare one anyway. So for those of you who are in that situation, just avoid the five deadly sins above. You will be fine. Besides, it is your special day. We won’t hold it against you.
And for those of you who are planning to get married someday… my mum certainly hope I will… My suggestion is to start writing one now. Coz that means you have one less thing to worry about on your wedding day!
