Top Five Public Speaking Articles To Read (26/10/2007)

Here’s my top five recommendations for this week.

234 Things I’ve Learned about Writing, Delivering and Marketing Speeches

Scott is my latest stalker victim. I visit his blog every day and I have read (almost) everything that he has written.

Why you may ask?

Because his stuff works.

He has written quite a number of books on approachability and thanks to his generous tips, I have learned how to make a name for my upcoming book. And so far, we have been doing pretty well in the publicity aspect, both online and offline.

For starters, I suggest you read the ebook I recommended. Witty and yet incisive. Once in a while, it is good to hear the same advice from someone else’s mouth. *grins*

When It Is Your Turn To Speak

This is an article by David Brooks, 1990 World Champion of Public Speaking. A personal mentor to several other champion speakers after him. If you always experience jitters before your speech, you got to check out the 7 tips that David shared in this article. I thought tip number 6 was extremely helpful, especially when I was drafting my contest speeches.

What Is Good PowerPoint Design?

There are TONS of materials out there in libraries, bookstores and on the internet, teaching you how to deliver an impactful powerpoint presentation… which begets the the million dollar question - WHY IS IT THAT MOST POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS STILL SUCK BIG TIME?

I will never understand why.. maybe someone can enlighten me.

Well, if you belong to the minority of speakers who wants to give the best to their audience, you will like what I have recommended you. In this well written article by Garr Reynold, he will explain to you - with examples - what makes a good powerpoint design. Each time I prepare my slides, I will go back to this article and re-read some of his pointers.

I suggest you pay close attention to the segment titled “Visual Makeover” where he will give you point by point evaluation of what went wrong with the slide and how you can visually enhance it. And here’s the thing, it is not just about beauty. It’s also about clarity and reinforcement. Read his article and you will understand what I mean.

This is not so much an article per say. It’s an example of what a good set of slides look like. Just by viewing the slides, you will extract a lot of valuable lessons on how you should design your slides and structure your presentation. There is a reason why this slideshow has been viewed 91579 times.

Here’s what I want you to do. Watch it. Take down notes. Write down what you like about the slides and why you like them. We will exchange notes in a week’s time. Go on, watch the slideshow!

Halloween Humor - The Twisted Trick of Tacky Treats

I can’t help but to end off this week’s recommendation with yet another hilarious article written by my good friend (whom I met in Panorama Toastmasters) - Avish Parashar. Halloween is nearing so if you people have no idea what crazy things to do at Halloween, perhaps this article will help you crank up some nutty ideas. Happy Advanced Halloween!

And have a great weekend!

Cheers,
